Our Premier Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Top Position.

At first glance, Lux may look closer to a difficult scholarly challenge than a new popular music project from a musician whose last single was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Broken across four distinct parts and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, frequently by way of the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward here, buoyed by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within a long roll call of collaborators. The pure daring alone renders the work of contemporary pop stars look rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album manages to escape dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, with sole praise going to Rosalía. While this is not her first project to alchemize the past and the present, the ambitions feel much greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more dramatic. What truly raises her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. When she is tearing your heart apart, the listener still desire to be right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

This exuberant spirit shines clearly on a stirring Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Then, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes in with cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic single featuring galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album is that the listener never quite understand—nor want to predict—what you will go next."

Almost every track concludes in a completely different point than how it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier rhythmic work begins out moody and brooding, with menacing beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth its rough edges.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves straddling the line of bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. One track performed primarily in English swells on a chorus that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spins upward. This trick is echoed on another expansive track that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its inherent excess. It is a deep well of buried gems that takes time to fully mine but never seem like a chore. While other major releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
